The number that matters is not the median

Half of all waterproofing companies on Google have 10 reviews or fewer. That is a low bar, and it hides how the trade actually competes. Nobody searching "basement waterproofing near me" scrolls through 40 listings. They see three in the map pack, open two, and book one inspection. The companies in those three spots in any real metro are not sitting at the median. They are at or past the 90th percentile, which is 144 reviews. The 75th percentile is 44. If you are between those two lines you are visible. Below 44 you are mostly invisible to the homeowner with water on the floor.

The spread is wide. 21.4% of companies have no reviews at all. 49.9% have fewer than ten and 65.3% have fewer than 25. At the other end, 13.8% have passed 100 and 3.3% have passed 500, and that top slice is where the regional franchise dealers and multi-crew operations live. The mean of 81.7 is dragged up by them. Ignore the mean and place yourself on the percentiles.

The 25th percentile is 1. A quarter of the trade has one review or none. For a company that installs two or three systems a week, every one of those jobs is a review that was never asked for.

Ratings: high everywhere, so they do not separate you

The average rating is 4.8 and 88.3% of rated companies sit at 4.5 or above. 53.4% hold a perfect 5.0, most of them because they have four reviews. A 4.9 is normal in this trade, not a differentiator. What the homeowner reads is the count, the recency, and whether the reviews mention the things she is worried about: did the crew show up when promised, was the basement left clean, did the warranty get honored two years later.

5.8% of companies are under 4.0, and that is the one place a rating decides anything. A homeowner comparing a 4.8 with 60 reviews against a 3.7 with 90 picks the 4.8 without reading further. 17.2% have no rating at all, which to a buyer about to spend $10,000 looks the same as not existing.

The website gap is the clearest line in the data

18.8% of waterproofing companies have no website on their profile. Companies with a site have a median of 16 reviews. Companies without one have a median of 1. The site does not cause the reviews; the owner who builds one is the same owner who asks for reviews. But the gap is large enough that a missing website is the surest sign of a competitor who will not contest the map pack, and the surest gap to close if it is yours. When the buyer wants to read warranty terms before letting anyone in the house, the 81.2% with a site are the only real competition.

Hours, photos and the Saturday storm

41.1% of waterproofing companies list no hours at all. Google treats that as unknown and shows nothing useful. 15.8% claim 24 hours, which for a trade that sells through scheduled inspections is more often a lie than a service. Only 36.1% show Saturday hours and 25% show Sunday, and that is the quiet problem: the heavy rain that floods a basement does not check the calendar. A profile that reads "Closed" at 10 a.m. on a stormy Saturday hands the inspection to whichever competitor listed weekend hours and has text-back turned on.

94.2% have a profile photo, so the few without one sit at the very bottom. 16.9% publish an email, a small signal the AI answer engines still use.

What to do with this

  1. Pull your own numbers. Open your Google Business Profile and write down your review count, rating, whether a website is linked, and what the hours say on Saturday.
  2. Place yourself. Under 10 reviews is the bottom half. Under 44 is the bottom three quarters. 144 and up is the map pack in most metros.
  3. If you are in the 18.8% with no site, fix that first. A six-page site with service pages, warranty terms, price ranges and tap-to-call is a week of work and the biggest single jump available. The website guide lists what goes on it.
  4. Set a review pace of one per installed system and one per inspection that ends well, asked for in person before the truck leaves. The reviews guide has the words.
  5. List real hours including Saturday, turn on missed-call text-back, and run the calculator to see what a missed storm-week call costs at your ticket size.
  6. Only then spend on ads. Ads pointed at a profile with six reviews, no site and "Closed" on Saturday pay to send homeowners to your competitor.

Method

This report aggregates 3,745 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for waterproofing companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
